Visual art, wooden and stone sculptures
Avashoni Mainganye was born in Venda in 1957. After completing a 2-year course at Rorke’s Drift Art & Craft Centre, his main subjects were lino printing and watercolour painting. He later developed painting in general and sculpture due to the influence of the VhaVenda practicing sculptures in the area. Nowadays his art activities include painting (with watercolour, acrylic and oils), sculpture (wood, metal, plaster, stone), printmaking (lino, etching, screen), collage, drama, poetry and photography.
National and international exposure
Avashoni organised various exhibitions in South Africa, and founded the VhaVenda Art Foundation. He participated in a broad range of events, workshops and traveled to Zimbabwe, Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium and the USA to teach his art forms.
He ran a sculpture workshop at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival under the theme “Craft Art”. He was also invited by the Grahamstown Art Festival Committee to conduct the craft/art sculpture workshop with Graham Jones.
