Walking and hiking

Medike (Western Soutpansberg)

Medike is a Natural Heritage Site, about 25 kilometers from Madi a Thavha, near the Sand River, which has cut an impressive gorge through the mountain.

The best way to experience Medike’s ecological diversity is to explore the farm by hiking.  About 30 kilometers well marked walking paths are available and lead through forests, archaeological sites, mountain streams, waterfalls and spectacular rock formations. There is also a cave with rock art paintings.

Flora en fauna is very diverse with more than 200 bird species such as Black Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Lanner Falcon, African Hawk Eagle and the rare Bat Hawk en Narina Trogon.

Wild animals at Medike are the brown hyena, klipspringer, bushbuck, aardvark, monkeys and bush babies. Medike is also well known for its butterflies and indigenous trees. Medike, like Madi a Thavha, is part of the UNESCO acclaimed Soutpansberg Biosphere Region, an area of 90.000 ha with unique natural and cultural heritage. The owners of Medike  offer a warm welcome and provide information about the various walking routes which range from 90 minutes to 6 hours to complete.
