Travelling along mountain ranges and diverse natural landscapes

Western Soutpansberg

This tour leads around the Western Soutpansberg, a route of about 170 kilometers, showing diverse natural landscapes and resources and some interesting cultural and art and crafts places.

The tour starts in Louis Trichardt, where the local market and taxi bus station can be visited to get a feel of the local atmosphere.

From Louis Trichardt, the route continues along the N1 North. Pass the tunnels and take the R 523, the northern road along the Soutpansberg mountains. Along this road views of endless bush land with many beautiful baobab trees can be enjoyed. After about 40 kilometres the salt pans, to which the mountains owe their name, are located at the left side. The saltpans can be visited during working days; it is also possible to make a walk to see bushmen paintings.

Follow the R 523 to Vivo, and turn on the R 522, the southern road along the Soutpansberg mountains with magnificent mountain and rock formations.

Further on this road lies Buysdorp, a small coloured community from the Cape who settled there in the early nineteenth century.

Follow the R 522 until the signs showing Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge about 8 kilometers before Louis Trichardt. The Dancing Fish gallery at the lodge accommodates a permanent exhibition about Venda, Tsonga and Northern Sotho cultures and the development of their art and crafts through traditional, transitional and contemporary phases. The Craft Art shop provides the work of 25 artists, crafters and crafts groups in Northern Limpopo. It is also possible to visit the Madi a Thavha Design workshop at the lodge.
